George Frideric Handel

As Handel originally intended, and as this Work was first performed, "Israel" had as its first section a re-worked version of Handel's Anthem "The ways of Zion do mourn" (see " Zion"), which he'd written - as its secondary title says - for the funeral of Queen Caroline, wife of George I. The re-worked version described the defeat of the Jews and their transportation to Egypt, and the portions commonly sung as Parts 1 & 2 of "Israel" were then Parts 2 & 3. These days, however, the re-worked version is rarely used for this purpose.
